Bacteria that make us ill are very clever. Through natural evolution, they constantly develop new strategies to arm themselves against our antibiotics leading to multi-resistant superbacteria that put all of mankind at risk. This is why we, a team of students from Leiden University, are developing bacteria that change colour when exposed to stress. To make this happen, we need your support. Will you say yes to stress? We need new antibiotics to combat resistant bacteria, but scientists have been unable to discover new types of antibiotics for the past couple of decades. Stressful substances are not deadly to bacteria by themselves, however, the right combination can create a lethal cocktail. This means we can outsmart resistant bacteria, without having to develop entirely new antibiotics.

Promotores: Prof. Hogendoorn, Co-promotor: Dr. What are the host immune defence mechanisms that control intracellular infections and how are these subverted by pathogens? In recent years, medical research has revealed how important the microbes in our gut are to our health. It would therefore be interesting to thoroughly unravel the interplay between microbes and body cells.
With my colleague Mark Boukes and a growing team of international scholars, we are now collecting jokes, memes and other forms of humor related to the current Corona crisis. This unpredecented global crisis has given rise to an unprecedented production and exchange of humor. As the crisis evolves, we see the jokes changing too. From toilet paper and hand washing to working from home and all kinds of family irritations. Yet, there must be more! We have already collected s of jokes, from many countries, in many languages, and also in many forms — films, songs, jokes, memes, cartoons … But we would like to receive as many examples as possible, from as many countries. You can send us your jokes, memes, etc via this survey link , which allows you to upload up to 5 items at a time, in 32 different languages. In times of crisis and disaster, new forms of humor emerge. For instance, there were jokes about the Titanic , about the explosion of the Space Shuttle , about the attacks of September 11th — and now there are jokes about the Corona crisis. While it may seem insensitive to make light of such serious matters, such jokes perform useful social functions.
